Sandra Whitby’s journey from a graphic artist to the fine arts studio began long ago. While a student at The Ivy School of Art in Pittsburgh,PA, she worked in her spare time as a window display designer for The Tweed Shop, a women’s clothier. She later completed her B.S. in Graphic Design from Pittsburgh’s LaRoche College and moved on to a position as a graphics assistant for the “Mister Rogers” program, the now famous and long-running PBS children’s show.
In the summer of 1983 Sandy moved to San Antonio and joined Warren Reed & Friends, a small boutique design shop. Since then she has become a fixture on the local and regional advertising scene, winning several awards for print and television advertising campaigns. In 1992 she left her full-time agency position to strike out on her own and has been working non-stop ever since. Given all of this design experience, it’s no surprise that Sandy’s paintings have a bit of a graphic edge. But those familiar with her corporate work may be surprised to see an element of deep introspection evident in the work which reveals a soulful aspect of her artistic pursuits. Yet, the collection of paintings transcends her design experience; clearly she has reached another level both professionally and personally.
Her paintings bring the viewer into a world of textural abstraction and rich colors. They evoke a dream-like etherealism, blending abstract representations with a raw textural quality. Her late mentor and painter, Alberto Mijangos said, “Her experience as a graphic artist, her selection of color as spiritual reference, and her use of materials request my participation in her dreams of mystical geometry.”
